Adventurous Hiking in Tusheti, Georgia: Trail to the ‘End of the World’

The trail from Omalo to Juta is one of the most spectacular and challenging hiking routes in Georgia. Spanning approximately 90 kilometers, you'll trek through the pristine wilderness of Tusheti and Khevsureti, passing through deep valleys, rolling alpine meadows, and towering mountain peaks. The nature here is pure and breathtaking: steep mountain passes, crystal-clear mountain streams, and an endless horizon of rugged peaks. The absolute highlight? Crossing the Atsunta Pass at an elevation of 3,500 meters, where you are rewarded with panoramic views you'll never forget.

The journey begins with an adventurous drive over the famous Abano Pass, the highest drivable mountain pass in Georgia at 2,850 meters. Only accessible during the summer months, this winding road takes you to one of the country's most remote areas. Tusheti is cut off by snow for most of the year, making it feel like the end of the world—a place where time stands still and nature reigns supreme.

Along the way, you'll walk through traditional mountain villages such as Dartlo, Parsma, and Girevi. These charming villages, with their iconic watchtowers and stone houses, are steeped in history and tradition. Here, you'll experience the warm Georgian hospitality and get a glimpse into the life of the Tush people, who have lived in harmony with nature for generations.

The trek ends in Juta, one of the highest villages in Georgia, with a spectacular view of the Chaukhi peaks, also known as the "Georgian Dolomites." But the adventure doesn't stop there. We continue to Stepantsminda, located at the foot of the majestic Mount Kazbek (5,054 meters). Here, you can visit the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, perched on a hilltop with breathtaking views. Finally, a stay in a modern hotel, with the option to relax in a spa, provides the perfect conclusion to this unforgettable journey.

During the trail, your camping gear is transported between the first guesthouses, and horses carry your backpack for part of the hike. This way, you don't have to carry your backpack during the strenuous climb of the Atsunta Pass. You'll also stay in traditional guesthouses, where you enjoy homemade meals, and in tents under a starry sky. Our local guide, who knows everything about Tusheti, accompanies you along the way. His stories about myths, legends, and life in this remote region add a unique dimension to your adventure.

The combination of physical challenge, authentic culture, and the rugged, untouched nature of the Caucasus makes this hike an experience that will stay with you forever.
