Lost World Trail: An Expedition into the Unknown

Deserted steppes, ancient caves, bubbling mud volcanoes, and deep-sculpted canyons—the Lost World Trail takes you to Georgia’s most hidden corners, where time stands still and nature reigns. It’s an expedition into the unknown, where forgotten fortresses, mysterious monasteries, and remote villages lie scattered across ever-changing landscapes. From rugged mountain passes and volcanic plains to vast savannahs and ancient wine regions—this trail plunges you deep into the wilderness, while also offering a taste of Georgia’s soul. A perfect blend of off-road driving, raw adventure, and authentic culture.

The journey begins in Tbilisi, where we meet and prepare our vehicles. Once we leave the city behind, we slowly disappear from the modern world. Our first destination is Tabatskuri Lake, a deep-blue alpine lake nestled between dormant volcanoes and endless steppes. Here, local fishermen still live as generations before them did—a glimpse into a forgotten way of life. We cast our fishing lines, enjoy a fresh catch prepared the Georgian way, and spend the night with the fishermen.

The next day takes us over the mighty Tskhratskaro Pass, where highland plateaus stretch as far as the eye can see. Our 4x4s leave their tracks across the volcanic terrain until even they can go no further. From there, we hike to Levani Lake, an intensely blue oasis in the middle of an uninhabited no-man’s-land. It feels like a place discovered only yesterday. Along the way, we visit a 4,000-year-old fortress, and pass through the eerie remnants of Soviet industrial Rustavi.

We continue to the Rainbow Mountains, where the earth seems to play with color—entering a landscape that feels like another planet. Here, we enjoy a traditional Georgian BBQ prepared for us on-site. But the greatest surprise is yet to come: the mud volcanoes of Takhti-Tepha, where the ground bubbles and hisses, as though the earth itself is still alive. This alien terrain makes you question whether you’re still in Georgia at all.

Our route takes us further into Chachuna Managed Reserve, a wild frontier where gazelles roam freely and mud rivers have carved dramatic gorges. Here, far from civilization, we build our camp and cook together under the stars.

Then comes the epic highlight of the journey: Vashlovani National Park. With its deep canyons, towering cliffs, and dry riverbeds, this is the most remote region of Georgia. A lost land—rediscovered only by those daring enough to enter.
